Led by the international hit\, “Day by Day\,” Godspell features a parade of beloved songs.\n\n\n \n\n\nA small group of people help Jesus Christ tell different parables by using a wide variety of games\, storytelling techniques and a hefty dose of comic timing. SUMMARY:RADIO PLAYS 28th September - 2nd October
DESCRIPTION:Update:  All ticket holders are being contacted by iTicket to reassign tickets to these new dates.  Tickets maybe available to the public\, we will let you know if this is the case. \n                               Tues 28th Sept – 1940’s THEME NIGHT ‘Round up the Usual Suspects’\n\n\n\nFri 1 Oct — SCIENCE FICTION THEME NIGHT ‘The Force is With You’\n\n\n\nRADIO PLAYS.\nIn the good old days-no TV or internet- families would huddle around the radio to hear dramas and comedies and conjure up their own images. They were helped by the sound effects emanating from the valve radio. “Radio Plays” takes us to the broadcasting studio where “actors”  perform in front of a live audience and are heard in millions of homes across the world.   The “oohs”\, “ahhs” and “boos” that are transmitted into the  living room are the genuine responses from that audience.   Even the sound effects were created live on stage by Foley Artists\, presenting their own entertainment for the audience.\nThe first radio play  is “The 39 Steps” by Joe Landry.    It is a suspenseful dramatisation with comedic elements\, that any true Hitchcock fan will enjoy.   Richard Hannay is on the run for a murder he did not commit.   He must clear his name before the authorities (or worse still\, the spies who are trying to silence him) get him first.\nThe second play  is “The War Of The Worlds” by Howard E. Koch.  This is\, word-for-word\, the script produced by Orson Welles on Halloween night\, 1938 – the script that convinced a nation it was being invaded.   It tells the tale of Professor Pierson\, who is called upon to examine the strange meteor that has landed in New Jersey.   He must\, somehow\, avoid the Martian’s Heatray\, and choking black smoke in order to survive.   It is a chilling tale of how life\, as we know it\, can change overnight. \n

But misfit Veronica Sawyer rejects their evil regime for a new boyfriend\, the dark and sexy stranger J.D.\, who plans to put the Heathers in their place – six feet under! \n\nHeathers The Musical is the darkly delicious story of Veronica Sawyer\, a brainy\, beautiful teenage misfit who hustles her way into the most powerful and ruthless clique at Westerberg High: the Heathers. But before she can get comfortable atop the high school food chain\, Veronica falls in love with the dangerously sexy new kid J.D. When Heather Chandler\, the Almighty\, kicks her out of the group\, Veronica decides to bite the bullet and kiss Heather’s aerobicized ass…but J.D. has another plan for that bullet\n\n\nVERONICA SAWYER – 17. She burns to be both cool and kind\, but doesn’t know yet how to be both at the same time. Fierce sense of right and wrong\, keen sense of ironic humor. Thinks she’s an old soul\, but she’s still innocent enough to be blindsided by love/hormones (or shocked by cruelty). Voice: High belting required\, up to Ab. Must have dynamic and stylistic range.\n\n\nJD – 17. He is darkly charismatic\, compelling\, attractive\, charming on the outside yet very damaged on the inside. Keen smarts and strong inventive comedy. Voice: Strong\, confident belt to at least an Ab\, A preferable; wide emotional range.\n\n\nHEATHER CHANDLER – 17. Richest\, hottest\, most magnetic\, cruelest girl in town. Relishes power and wields it like a scalpel – no fear\, no patience\, no mercy. Voice: Strong belt to F or higher preferred. Mezzo for chorus. NOTE: In certain choral songs Chandler can switch parts with her other Heathers as needed.\n\n\nHEATHER MCNAMARA – 17. Beautiful\, innocent\, stupid\, can be mean on command if Heather Chandler orders it\, but actually quite vulnerable and fearful. Voice: Strong belt to Db\, D preferred. Soprano for chorus. NOTE: in certain choral songs Heather Mac and Duke can switch vocal parts as needed.\n\n\nHEATHER DUKE – 17. Whipping-girl of the 3 Heathers. When she finally becomes Queen Bee she wields power like a bulldozer. Alto for chorus. Voice: Strong belt to C\, D preferred. Alto for chorus. NOTE: in certain choral songs Heather Duke and Mac can switch vocal parts as needed.\n\n\nMARTHA DUNNSTOCK – 17. Nicknamed “Martha Dumptruck”\, the opposite of hot\, confident\, or popular. Huge and beautiful soul\, optimistic even in the face of rejection. Voice: Strong belt to E or F\, wide vocal expression.\n\n\nRAM SWEENEY – 17\, Linebacker. SUMMARY:Auditions The Jailhouse Frocks 31st August
DESCRIPTION:Looking for 6 actors\, 3 women and 3 men. Singing required.\nAuditions 31 August 10 am to 3pm\nEmail jill@specialevents.co.nz for an audtion time.\nCome prepared with a monolgue and a song from any genre \nPlot:\nShattering dimwitted Officer Dwayne’s tranquil evening at the Birchwood County police station is interrupted by the arrests of three unlikely women; the mayor’s wife in a state of complete alcoholic breakdown\, the local mad cat-lady looking for somewhere to stay out of the rain\, and a dangerous looking New Yorker who has managed to crash her car into the police station while speeding through town. \nThe already chaotic situation descends into mayhem with the arrival of a New York gangster\, disguised as an FBI agent\, hell-bent on exacting revenge on his wife who is locked in the cell. By the end of the night\, the ladies have formed a gang\, sang some songs\, escaped from jail and locked the gangster up in their place\, leaving Officer Dwayne wondering how on earth he’s managed to make the arrest of a lifetime. \nDescribed critically as “a bright\, unabashed stage romp that’s a lot of fun right from the start and guaranteed to lift spirits” The Jailhouse Frocks is a sure fire comedy cracker.\nOfficer Dwayne Pope- Incredibly upbeat\, optimistic and dimwitted\, He has been transferred from a nearby Police Department to help the Birchwood County Police Department. Birchwood did not get the best deal. Dwayne never fully recovered from a head injury\, although we suspect he was much the same prior to it… he just can be excused now. \nCharacters:\nVoice of the Chief – The Chief communicates to Officer Dwayne via the police radio. The Chief is frustrated at being short staffed and having to work late. Unfortunately Dwayne hasn’t relieved the Chiefs workload but added to it. \n Cathy Monroe – Cathy has cats. A lot of cats. Due to a cat related insect infestation of her house she is in search of a place to spend the night. She is insightful one moment\, and half-witted and ludicrous the next. One thing she is not; is subtle. \n Elena Davidson – Elena’s entire identity is wrapped around her reputation as the Mayor’s wife. Beneath her educated\, highly strung and pretentious exterior is a woman trying to find her own place in the world. \nGloria Romano – A New Yorker with a tough exterior\, Gloria is\, along with her mobster husband Tony\, hiding out in Birchwood County. Street smart Gloria is quick witted and a shrewd judge of character. She was trying to escape from her husband when she was arrested. \n Tony Romano – New York mafia style gangster on the lam in sleepy Birchwood County with his wife Gloria. Tony is charming\, menacing and very\, very dangerous.

SUMMARY:Hamlet Dies at the End Auditions - 3rd & 4th August 1-3pm
DESCRIPTION:Hamlet Dies at the End by Gavin McGibbon 1st to 7th November 2019 show dates. Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th August\, 1-3pm at The Playhouse. \nWell of course Hamlet dies at the end\, but not in this play about a ragtag bunch of misfits trying to come to terms with life\, each other… oh and Shakespeare’s great tragedy\, Hamlet. \nHamlet Dies at the End would be a tragedy if it weren’t so comical. It deals with death but nobody dies (quite) and it ends by affirming life in all its puzzling inconsistency and prolific glory. From 91-year-old Charlie\, whose wife has just left him\, to young Jimmy\, who set fire to his cat\, the characters bring Hamlet to life in ways you never thought possible. \nAn ultimately heart-warming comedy from award-winning New Zealand playwright Gavin McGibbon\, (‘Holding On’ and ‘Under The Hood’). \nSynopsis:\nFive people with little in common are thrown together in a workshop to learn Shakespeare’s Hamlet from an intense drama tutor\, with the aim of performing excerpts before an invited audience. “This is art\, not therapy”\, says the tutor\, but the members of the group have a different idea. As they interact we learn their various motivations and finally even Shakespeare’s great work becomes a vehicle for some kind of understanding and resolution. \nCharacters\nBecker\nAge: forties-fifties; the unemployed drama teacher\, ‘plagued by self-loathing’ but tries his best (when put on the spot) to share his love of theatre with others. \nDouglas\nAge: forties-fifties; a hard-rocking drummer in a covers band; outwardly easy-going but going through a difficult patch. \nPatricia\nAge: forties-fifties; single; librarian; thinks she’s God’s gift to the stage; dedicated follower of Becker. \nRhonda\nAge: forties; mother\, wife and bus-driver\, not necessarily in that order; no-nonsense\, not someone you want to mess with. \nCharlie\nAge: ‘ninety-one’ (or thereabouts); veteran of WWII; still full of life; struggling to come to terms with being deserted by his wife at 91. \nJimmy\nAge: nineteen; very withdrawn and quiet but has hidden talents that slowly become revealed.

Perry is an only child\, curious\, naïve yet intuitively wise. She is hungry for the affection and gift of time that she doesn’t receive from her very busy professional parents. Her relationship with her grandmother is the focus of the play. Like most children\, Perry sees the essential truth in people and situations. \nHonora Lee—Perry’s grandmother\, a resident at Santa Lucia Rest Home. A feisty\, intelligent woman\, an ex-teacher. Cranky and compulsive\, she is losing her memory and command of words. Unable to show affection for her family she is caring and loving towards her friend Doris\, another resident at Santa Lucia. \nFather—In his 40’s or early 50’s. Perry’s father and Honora’s son. Always flying off to conferences and meetings\, he is concerned with ‘sustainable business practices’. Cannot understand why Perry would want to spend time with his ‘eccentric’ mother. Rather afraid of seeing any likeness to him in his mother. \nMother—in her 40’s or early 50’s. Perry’s mother. A very busy psychologist\, she believes an only child must be kept occupied with after-school activities. The most interest she takes in her daughter is when she is correcting her grammar. Although both parents love Perry they are distant and awkward in their relationship with her. They change a little as the alphabet book takes shape. \nAudrey—A nurse at Santa Lucia\, ‘the laughingest person’ Perry has ever met. Kind and assertive. Could be any age. Treats the residents with the same dignity they were given in their former lives. A nurse at Santa Lucia\, also kind and caring. Probably younger but necessarily. Could double as Claude. Accepting and insightful. \nNina—Perry’s nanny and Claude’s mother. In her 20’s\, 30’s or 40’s. Kind and patient with all the time in the world for Perry and Claude. Nina makes all the homemade baking that Perry takes to Santa Lucia. \nClaude—Nina’s 3-year-old son who shares Perry’s interest in bumblebees. \nDoris—Honora’s special friend at Santa Lucia. (Honora calls her Molly). Frailer than Honora. Very emotional loves food and is attached to her rag doll Jennifer. Honora helps Doris with basic tasks like doing up her zips and wiping her mouth but she also argues with her and doesn’t like Doris blowing kisses. \nMelvyn Broome—A resident. Mad on cricket. Has a walking stick which he uses as a weapon when Honora steals his peppermints. \nBeverley—Another resident\, unable to talk but eloquent through her actions and expressions. When the other residents recite the alphabet or sing\, Beverley just opens and closes her mouth. \nEleanor—Resident with a walking frame. Her way of communicating is to stare or grab people by the wrist. \nGeoffrey— Resident in a wheelchair. Often falls sideways in his chair. \nDorothy—Resident who plays the piano (non-speaking part). \nOlga—A new resident. \nAbout the play \nBased on the award-winning 2012 junior fiction novel by Kate de Goldi. This was adapted for radio and then for the stage by Jane Waddell. It premiered at Circa in 2016. \nDeceptively simple\, this is a very special and moving story of acceptance\, identity\, kindness\, love and patience\, told with playfulness\, subtle humour and empathy. Each character is important\, even if in a non-speaking role. \nThe focus is the relationship between Perry and Honora Lee. As Honora’s scattered mind loses the facility of recall and command of language\, Perry creates new entries in the alphabet book she is making with the help of the residents of Santa Lucia Rest Home. It is a gift of love for her grandmother. Perry realises that an orderly alphabet is impossible\, hence the title ‘The ACB with Honora Lee’. \nThe concept of family is central to the play. Perry says\, “Family time would be quite a lot better if there was more family.’ Nina and Claude fill part of her need\, and the community at Santa Lucia are a ‘family’. Perry feels comfortable and at home there. Disease and death are treated as a natural part of life. Bees occupy Perry’s imagination and curiosity. They are everywhere\, dead and dying. Like the old people at Santa Lucia\, they are social creatures living in colonies. They lead useful lives (pollinating) and then die. \nAlthough there is sadness in the problems of ageing\, and the tragic nature of mental decline\, this is balanced with the humour that naturally arises from confusion. Because of the sensitive way the story is told\, the play is uplifting and the overwhelming feeling is of warmth and hope. \nThe play has a running time of approx. 75 minutes with no interval. \nThe play will be staged from October 5-12th\n2018. \nAuditions will be held at the Playhouse\, Church Street on the 8th and 15th July from 1 pm.\nContact Carol Angland on 021405000 for more information.

SUMMARY:AUDITIONS - Blackadder Goes Forth\, Episode 5&6
DESCRIPTION:The popular cast from the Mill Theatre’s 2014 season return with the last two episodes. \nIn the first “General Hospital” a game of “I Spy” goes terribly wrong when a bomb strikes Blackadder’s bunker and injures George\, leaving him in the care of the kindly Nurse Mary at the field hospital. After Melchett and Darling inform Blackadder that there is a German spy in the hospital giving away their battle plans\, Blackadder and Darling are sent undercover. \nThe final episode of this series\, “Goodbyeee”\, Blackadder reflects that millions have died but the troops have advanced no further than “an asthmatic ant with some heavy shopping”. Now\, at last\, the ‘final’ big push looms\, and Blackadder is willing to try anything to avoid it. Will putting a pair of underpants on his head and shoving two pencils up his nose get Blackadder invalided back to Blighty? \nSYNOPSIS AND CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS \nGeneral Hospital:\nAngry that his plans always seem to fall into enemy hands\, General Melchett asks Captain Blackadder to “winkle out” the spy he suspects is housed in the hospital. Blackadder immediately suspects the patient with the thick German accent and a burning curiosity about troop movements but decides to embark on an extremely thorough (and more importantly: long)  investigation as a way of staying out of the trenches. \nAdditional characters:\nNurse Mary:  is probably the most complex single-episode character in Blackadder – she is a woman of many faces\, and one that is deceitful and frank.\nBrigadier Smith: Requires a “German” accent \nGoodbyee:\nAfter years of futile trench warfare\, General Melchett gives the order for the “big push”: a suicidal charge across the battlefield towards hundreds of German machine guns. Desperate to avoid participating\, Captain Blackadder hatches a plan to convince his superiors that he has gone insane and therefore cannot go into combat. \nAdditional character:\nGeneral Haig: Upper-class British accent.\nExtras required for chorus numbers. \n  \nRequired small part male & female Actors and singers\nAudition song Pack Up Your Troubles\nSHOW DATES 8th – 24th NOV
