SUMMARY:The Secret Lives of Extremely Old People - Encore Season
DESCRIPTION:BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND AS THE PREVIOUS SEASON WAS SOLD OUT.\n“THE SECRET LIVES OF EXTREMELY OLD PEOPLE”\nENCORE SEASON \nFive fictional nonagenarians share their fascinating stories.  They riff\, they rant\, they rebel\, they remember.  Tragedy hovers and death is drawing close.  So why do they say they are lucky?  Deeper than data about old age\, their stories are startling\, exhilarating and moving. \nPlaywright Rachel McAlpine was shocked to the core when her GP predicted she would live to 99.  Like most people\, she had opinions about very old age but no experience.  She asked local people in their 90s about their lives and found their revelations broke all the stereotypes.  She also walked the footpaths of Wellington\, asking people how they see their life unfolding at 90.  The play\, “The Secret Lives of Extremely Old People” erupted from those conversations.  Overall\, the success of the play depends upon character\, and mercifully\, the script avoids patronising stereotypes. \nWriter Rachel McAlpine said of the previous SCDL production\,  “The director\, cast\, crew\, and production team are to be commended for their courage in mounting what in many ways is a difficult play\, and for putting across the issues with considerable warmth and good humour. They are to be congratulated on the patent success of their undertaking. Well done all!” \nOnly five performances \nWednesday 25th Feb 7.30 pm.\nThursday 26th Feb 7.30 pm.\nFriday 27th Feb 7.30 pm.\nSaturday 28th Feb 2 pm.\nSunday 1st Mar 2 pm. \nBuy tickets online at iTICKET and at the Timaru Information Centre \nTHE PREVIOUS PERFORMANCES WERE QUICKLY SOLD OUT SO BUY TICKETS SOONER RATHER THAN LATER.

SUMMARY:Anne of Green Gables Auditions
DESCRIPTION:Anne of Green Gables is coming to the Playhouse stage! \nSince Canadian author L.M.Montogomery created the character in 1908 Anne of Green Gables has been a family favourite. The book has sold over 50 million copies. Anne has delighted succeeding generations with her struggles as an orphan to be accepted in a new school and community while remaining true to herself: as she says\, she prefers to be called “Anne spelled with an E”. Her imaginative nature and positive attitude in the face of adversity and tragedy have inspired countless children. \nRepertory\, with director Ella Thomas are excited to offer auditions for roles in the production. Ella has chosen a dramatisation that stays true to the original characters. There are roles for at least eleven adults and a dozen young people\, aged approximately 12-16\, making this an excellent opportunity for aspiring young thespians. There is also one role for a girl aged between 6-10\, which could be shared. Anne in the story has red hair but Ella says that this will not be a barrier and she wants to see blondes\, brunettes and all colours in between at auditions. Ella would like to work with a diverse cast of actors interested in creating genuine characters. \nThe play will come to the stage June 7-15. \nAuditions will be held Friday 23rd February 7-9pm and Saturday 24th February 2-5pm\, 2024 at the Playhouse\, 198 Church Street\, West End\, Timaru 7910. \nFor more audition information contact Jon Harris\, chair of Repertory at: laserjon33@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Glorious - Auditions
DESCRIPTION:Audition Notice\n “Glorious”\nWritten by Peter Quilter.\nDirected by Alice Sollis\nTHE TRUE STORY OF FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS\,\nTHE WORST SINGER IN THE WORLD\nAuditions 2.00pm\, Saturday 17th June at the SCDL Playhouse.\nChurch Street. Timaru\nShow dates – 27th October to 4th November 2023\nRehearsals start Sunday 13th August. \nA truly delightful comedy\,“Glorious” is the story of Florence Foster Jenkins.\nIn 1940’s New York\, the performer who everyone wanted to see live was Florence Foster Jenkins\, an enthusiastic soprano whose pitch was far from perfect. Known as ‘the first lady of the sliding scale’\, she warbled and screeched her way through the evening to an audience who mostly fell about with laughter. But this delusional and joyously happy woman paid little attention to her critics\, instead she was surrounded by a circle of devoted friends who were almost as eccentric as she was.\nBased upon a true story\, the play spins from Florence’s charity recitals and extravagent balls\, through to her bizarre recording sessions and an ultimate triumph at Carnegie Hall in this hilarious and heart-warming comedy. \nCHARACTER ROLES:\nFLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS – a very eccentric American lady\, 30 – 60s\, needsto look 50s. (needs to be able to sing atrociously)\nCOSME McMOON – her Piano accompanist\, 20s to 40s (preferable if he could play)\nST CLAIR – Florence’s English boyfriend\, failed actor\, similar vintage to Florence.\nDOROTHY – Florence’s friend\, also eccentric\, similar vintage to Florence.\nMARIA – Florence & St Clair’s cook and housemaid (does not speak a word of English and no-one understands what she says either)\nMRS. VERRINDER-GEDGE – a righteous American lady\, middle age (could double as Maria) \nTo book an audition time and all enquiries contact:\nalicesollis@actrix.co.nz or phone 027 470 5095

In the mounting tension of the trial there are three amazing developments. Vole’s wife takes the stand and coldly swears away her husband’s alibi. The show must go on. \n\n“Easy Money” \nBy Roger Hall\nDirected by Alice Sollis \nOn Stage Playhouse from 21st to 29th August 2020 \n“Easy Money” is a clever satire about greed\, adapted from Ben Jonson’s 17th century play “The Alchemist”. The story follows two con artists\, Trudi and Stephen\, as they connive to fool their prestigious Auckland neighbours into buying shares in the Auckland Harbour Bridge. If there’s money to be made in a scam\, they know how to do it.\nWith double-crosses\, dirty tricks\, and twists and turns this is Roger Hall at his best.\nRoger Hall said that he saw “The Alchemist” in London and it was “…gut achingly funny. A merchant flees the town to avoid the Plague\, leaving his house in charge of his servant who uses it as a base to defraud as many people as possible.\nBring it up to date. An upfront Auckland Harbour luxury apartment let out via Airbnb to a couple from Australia for a four-week stay… It doesn’t take them long to find others in the apartment block ripe for plucking. And away we go.”

SUMMARY:Hamlet Dies at the End - Tickets on sale NOW!!!
DESCRIPTION:Hamlet Dies at the End\nA comedy by Gavin McGibbon: Playhouse\n1st to 8th November 2019 \nHamlet Dies at the End \nFrom award-winning New Zealand playwright\, Gavin McGibbon\, (‘Holding On’ and ‘Under The Hood’) comes a heart-warming comedy of classic Kiwi characters in a play about a play. \nOf course Hamlet dies at the end\, I hear you say\, but wait – before he does there’s a whole lot of shenanigans with a ragtag bunch of misfits trying to come to terms with life\, each other… oh and Shakespeare’s great tragedy\, Hamlet. \nPerhaps Hamlet Dies at the End would be tragic if it weren’t so comical. It deals with death but nobody dies (completely)\, it gets to grips with some “full-on sh*t” and it ends by affirming life in all its puzzling glory. From 91-year-old Charlie\, whose wife has just left him\, to young Jimmy\, who set fire to his cat\, the characters bring Hamlet to life in ways you never thought possible.

SUMMARY:Hamlet Dies at the End Auditions - 3rd & 4th August 1-3pm
DESCRIPTION:Hamlet Dies at the End by Gavin McGibbon 1st to 7th November 2019 show dates. Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th August\, 1-3pm at The Playhouse. \nWell of course Hamlet dies at the end\, but not in this play about a ragtag bunch of misfits trying to come to terms with life\, each other… oh and Shakespeare’s great tragedy\, Hamlet. \nHamlet Dies at the End would be a tragedy if it weren’t so comical. It deals with death but nobody dies (quite) and it ends by affirming life in all its puzzling inconsistency and prolific glory. From 91-year-old Charlie\, whose wife has just left him\, to young Jimmy\, who set fire to his cat\, the characters bring Hamlet to life in ways you never thought possible. \nAn ultimately heart-warming comedy from award-winning New Zealand playwright Gavin McGibbon\, (‘Holding On’ and ‘Under The Hood’). \nSynopsis:\nFive people with little in common are thrown together in a workshop to learn Shakespeare’s Hamlet from an intense drama tutor\, with the aim of performing excerpts before an invited audience. “This is art\, not therapy”\, says the tutor\, but the members of the group have a different idea. As they interact we learn their various motivations and finally even Shakespeare’s great work becomes a vehicle for some kind of understanding and resolution. \nCharacters\nBecker\nAge: forties-fifties; the unemployed drama teacher\, ‘plagued by self-loathing’ but tries his best (when put on the spot) to share his love of theatre with others. \nDouglas\nAge: forties-fifties; a hard-rocking drummer in a covers band; outwardly easy-going but going through a difficult patch. \nPatricia\nAge: forties-fifties; single; librarian; thinks she’s God’s gift to the stage; dedicated follower of Becker. \nRhonda\nAge: forties; mother\, wife and bus-driver\, not necessarily in that order; no-nonsense\, not someone you want to mess with. \nCharlie\nAge: ‘ninety-one’ (or thereabouts); veteran of WWII; still full of life; struggling to come to terms with being deserted by his wife at 91. \nJimmy\nAge: nineteen; very withdrawn and quiet but has hidden talents that slowly become revealed.
