SUMMARY:Disney's Beauty and the Beast
DESCRIPTION:Disney’s Beauty and the Beast\, the award-winning\, smash hit Broadway musical\, is coming to Timaru!  \nStep into the enchanted world of Broadway’s modern classic\, the story of Belle\, a bright\, beautiful and independent young woman\, taken prisoner in the desolate castle by the horrific Beast (who is really a dashing prince trapped in a spell by an enchantress). \nThe curse extends to all who live in the castle – Lumiere the candlestick holder\, Chip the tea cup\, Cogsworth the clock\, and the lovable Mrs. Potts the teapot\, along with the cutlery\, the dishes and every talking object.  Will they ever be human again? \nDespite her fears\, Belle befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the beast’s hideous exterior\, allowing her to recognise the kind heart and soul of the true prince that hides on the inside. \nIf the Beast can learn to love and be loved\, the curse will end\, and he and his household will be transformed into his former self. \nDisney’s Beauty and the Beast has become an international sensation that has played to over 35 million people worldwide in 13 countries. \nThe Theatre Royal Timaru will come alive with spectacular song and dance\, extravagant costumes and stunning pyrotechnics and special effects. \nThis magical production will be a favourite for every age. \n\nThe show opens Friday\, September 21 and goes through Saturday\, September 29\nAt the Theatre Royal\, Timaru\n7.30pm evening shows each day except Sunday 23 show is a 2:00pm matinee \n

SUMMARY:ACB with Honora Lee
DESCRIPTION:Based on the award-winning 2012 junior fiction novel by Kate de Goldi. This was adapted for radio and then for the stage by Jane Waddell. It premiered at Circa in 2016. \nDeceptively simple\, this is a very special and moving story of acceptance\, identity\, kindness\, love and patience\, told with playfulness\, subtle humour and empathy. Each character is important\, even if in a non-speaking role. \nThe focus is the relationship between Perry and Honora Lee. As Honora’s scattered mind loses the facility of recall and command of language\, Perry creates new entries in the alphabet book she is making with the help of the residents of Santa Lucia Rest Home. It is a gift of love for her grandmother. Perry realises that an orderly alphabet is impossible\, hence the title ‘The ACB with Honora Lee’. \nThe concept of family is central to the play. Perry says\, “Family time would be quite a lot better if there was more family.’ Nina and Claude fill part of her need\, and the community at Santa Lucia are a ‘family’. Perry feels comfortable and at home there. Disease and death are treated as a natural part of life. Bees occupy Perry’s imagination and curiosity. They are everywhere\, dead and dying. Like the old people at Santa Lucia\, they are social creatures living in colonies. They lead useful lives (pollinating) and then die. \nAlthough there is sadness in the problems of ageing\, and the tragic nature of mental decline\, this is balanced with the humour that naturally arises from confusion. Because of the sensitive way the story is told\, the play is uplifting and the overwhelming feeling is of warmth and hope. \nThe play has a running time of approx. 75 minutes with no interval.

SUMMARY:Blackadder Goes Forth\, Episode 5&6
DESCRIPTION:Based on the outrageous\, funny\, poignant but highly popular TV series\, the South Canterbury Drama League presents Blackadder Goes Forth\, fittingly 100 years to the month from Armistice Day. \nBlackadder Goes Forth is the perfect opportunity for an end of year social event for everyone.  The dinner and show will be on the stage at The Playspace\, Timaru’s newest performance space\, giving the audience a taste of the limelight as they are entertained while enjoying a delicious 2-course meal. (Vegetarian & Diabetic options available on request). \n\nThe setting is 1917 on the Western Front of the First World War\, with another ‘big push’ planned.  For Captain Edmund Blackadder and his fellow dugout companions Baldrick and George\, the major concern is to avoid being sent over the top to certain death.  Can they continue to escape from Melchett’s disastrous battle plans? \nThe play is a stage adaptation of Richard Curtis and Ben Elton’s award-winning series.  It chronicles Blackadder’s attempts to escape the trenches through various schemes\, most of which fail due to bad fortune\, misunderstandings and the general incompetence of his comrades. \nWe start in General Hospital with General Melchett\, angry that his plans always seem to fall into enemy hands\, asks Captain Blackadder to “winkle out” the spy he suspects is housed in the hospital. Blackadder immediately suspects the patient with the thick German accent and a burning curiosity about troop movements but decides to embark on an extremely thorough\, and more importantly – long\, investigation as a way of staying out of the trenches. \nThen it’s Goodbyee. After years of futile trench warfare\, General Melchett gives the order for the “big push”: a suicidal charge across the battlefield towards hundreds of German machine guns. Desperate to avoid participating\, Captain Blackadder hatches a plan to convince his superiors that he has gone insane and therefore cannot go into combat. \nThe production features the idealistic Upper-Class Edwardian twit Lieutenant George; the profoundly stupid but dogged Private S. Baldrick\, the eccentric and clearly mad General Melchett\, the woman of many faces Nurse Mary\, plus other memorable characters.

Or maybe the special effects expert?  Can the Inspector (with the help of the Sergeant) solve the crime before dawn?  Of course he can – this is theatre\, but can you detect the murderer before the Inspector does?\nWe are proud to be the first in the world to reveal Robert Duncan’s latest offering presented by a star studded cast. Mark your diary\, this is a “must see”. \nThe Playhouse – 15th-22nd March 7.30pm – Sunday 17th March 3pm \n

SUMMARY:Hamlet Dies at the End Auditions - 3rd & 4th August 1-3pm
DESCRIPTION:Hamlet Dies at the End by Gavin McGibbon 1st to 7th November 2019 show dates. Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th August\, 1-3pm at The Playhouse. \nWell of course Hamlet dies at the end\, but not in this play about a ragtag bunch of misfits trying to come to terms with life\, each other… oh and Shakespeare’s great tragedy\, Hamlet. \nHamlet Dies at the End would be a tragedy if it weren’t so comical. It deals with death but nobody dies (quite) and it ends by affirming life in all its puzzling inconsistency and prolific glory. From 91-year-old Charlie\, whose wife has just left him\, to young Jimmy\, who set fire to his cat\, the characters bring Hamlet to life in ways you never thought possible. \nAn ultimately heart-warming comedy from award-winning New Zealand playwright Gavin McGibbon\, (‘Holding On’ and ‘Under The Hood’). \nSynopsis:\nFive people with little in common are thrown together in a workshop to learn Shakespeare’s Hamlet from an intense drama tutor\, with the aim of performing excerpts before an invited audience. “This is art\, not therapy”\, says the tutor\, but the members of the group have a different idea. As they interact we learn their various motivations and finally even Shakespeare’s great work becomes a vehicle for some kind of understanding and resolution. \nCharacters\nBecker\nAge: forties-fifties; the unemployed drama teacher\, ‘plagued by self-loathing’ but tries his best (when put on the spot) to share his love of theatre with others. \nDouglas\nAge: forties-fifties; a hard-rocking drummer in a covers band; outwardly easy-going but going through a difficult patch. \nPatricia\nAge: forties-fifties; single; librarian; thinks she’s God’s gift to the stage; dedicated follower of Becker. \nRhonda\nAge: forties; mother\, wife and bus-driver\, not necessarily in that order; no-nonsense\, not someone you want to mess with. \nCharlie\nAge: ‘ninety-one’ (or thereabouts); veteran of WWII; still full of life; struggling to come to terms with being deserted by his wife at 91. \nJimmy\nAge: nineteen; very withdrawn and quiet but has hidden talents that slowly become revealed.

SUMMARY:Auditions The Jailhouse Frocks 31st August
DESCRIPTION:Looking for 6 actors\, 3 women and 3 men. Singing required.\nAuditions 31 August 10 am to 3pm\nEmail jill@specialevents.co.nz for an audtion time.\nCome prepared with a monolgue and a song from any genre \nPlot:\nShattering dimwitted Officer Dwayne’s tranquil evening at the Birchwood County police station is interrupted by the arrests of three unlikely women; the mayor’s wife in a state of complete alcoholic breakdown\, the local mad cat-lady looking for somewhere to stay out of the rain\, and a dangerous looking New Yorker who has managed to crash her car into the police station while speeding through town. \nThe already chaotic situation descends into mayhem with the arrival of a New York gangster\, disguised as an FBI agent\, hell-bent on exacting revenge on his wife who is locked in the cell. By the end of the night\, the ladies have formed a gang\, sang some songs\, escaped from jail and locked the gangster up in their place\, leaving Officer Dwayne wondering how on earth he’s managed to make the arrest of a lifetime. \nDescribed critically as “a bright\, unabashed stage romp that’s a lot of fun right from the start and guaranteed to lift spirits” The Jailhouse Frocks is a sure fire comedy cracker.\nOfficer Dwayne Pope- Incredibly upbeat\, optimistic and dimwitted\, He has been transferred from a nearby Police Department to help the Birchwood County Police Department. Birchwood did not get the best deal. Dwayne never fully recovered from a head injury\, although we suspect he was much the same prior to it… he just can be excused now. \nCharacters:\nVoice of the Chief – The Chief communicates to Officer Dwayne via the police radio. The Chief is frustrated at being short staffed and having to work late. Unfortunately Dwayne hasn’t relieved the Chiefs workload but added to it. \n Cathy Monroe – Cathy has cats. A lot of cats. Due to a cat related insect infestation of her house she is in search of a place to spend the night. She is insightful one moment\, and half-witted and ludicrous the next. One thing she is not; is subtle. \n Elena Davidson – Elena’s entire identity is wrapped around her reputation as the Mayor’s wife. Beneath her educated\, highly strung and pretentious exterior is a woman trying to find her own place in the world. \nGloria Romano – A New Yorker with a tough exterior\, Gloria is\, along with her mobster husband Tony\, hiding out in Birchwood County. Street smart Gloria is quick witted and a shrewd judge of character. She was trying to escape from her husband when she was arrested. \n Tony Romano – New York mafia style gangster on the lam in sleepy Birchwood County with his wife Gloria. Tony is charming\, menacing and very\, very dangerous.

SUMMARY:Matthew\, Mark\, Luke and Joanne 11th-15th Sept 2019
DESCRIPTION:MATTHEW\, MARK\, LUKE AND JOANNE. A slick sophisticated comedy beyond belief. \nMatthew\, a high performing advertising executive\, successful and happily married\, has a vision in a Supermarket. This epiphany drastically changes his life to the consternation of his wife and business partner. His successful creative energy is now channeled into charitable works. \nMark\, his business partner and friend\, tries to hide his dismay and disgust at this radical change. Mark is secular and very materialistic. His general nihilism is a dramatic counterfoil to Matthew’s new beliefs and way of life. \nJoanne\, Matthew’s wife\, a former lawyer\, now practices yoga\, and believes in homeopathy. She relies on her life coach and large doses of the herbal remedy Ignatia for health and happiness. Her own life experiences make her intolerant of Matthew’s new found beliefs and she demands Matthew choose either Christ or her. \n“Matthew\, Mark\, Luke and Joanne” presents these characters\, their beliefs and passions in an entirely believable manner. This play is a parable of our times and underscores many topical issues-faith\, materialism\, tolerance and respect. Carl Nixon’s work has been described as a “funny\, sharp and crisply staged play about the basic human need for some form of spiritual release.”

SUMMARY:Hamlet Dies at the End - Tickets on sale NOW!!!
DESCRIPTION:Hamlet Dies at the End\nA comedy by Gavin McGibbon: Playhouse\n1st to 8th November 2019 \nHamlet Dies at the End \nFrom award-winning New Zealand playwright\, Gavin McGibbon\, (‘Holding On’ and ‘Under The Hood’) comes a heart-warming comedy of classic Kiwi characters in a play about a play. \nOf course Hamlet dies at the end\, I hear you say\, but wait – before he does there’s a whole lot of shenanigans with a ragtag bunch of misfits trying to come to terms with life\, each other… oh and Shakespeare’s great tragedy\, Hamlet. \nPerhaps Hamlet Dies at the End would be tragic if it weren’t so comical. It deals with death but nobody dies (completely)\, it gets to grips with some “full-on sh*t” and it ends by affirming life in all its puzzling glory. From 91-year-old Charlie\, whose wife has just left him\, to young Jimmy\, who set fire to his cat\, the characters bring Hamlet to life in ways you never thought possible.

If there’s money to be made in a scam\, they know how to do it.\nWith double-crosses\, dirty tricks\, and twists and turns this is Roger Hall at his best.\nRoger Hall said that he saw “The Alchemist” in London and it was “…gut achingly funny. A merchant flees the town to avoid the Plague\, leaving his house in charge of his servant who uses it as a base to defraud as many people as possible.\nBring it up to date. An upfront Auckland Harbour luxury apartment let out via Airbnb to a couple from Australia for a four-week stay… It doesn’t take them long to find others in the apartment block ripe for plucking. And away we go.”
