DESCRIPTION:Hamlet Dies at the End    by Gavin McGibbon 1st to 7th November 2019 show dates.  Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th August\, 1-3pm at The Playhouse. \nWell of course Hamlet dies at the end\, but not in this play about a ragtag bunch of misfits trying to come to terms with life\, each other… oh and Shakespeare’s great tragedy\, Hamlet. \nHamlet Dies at the End would be a tragedy if it weren’t so comical. It deals with death but nobody dies (quite) and it ends by affirming life in all its puzzling inconsistency and prolific glory. From 91-year-old Charlie\, whose wife has just left him\, to young Jimmy\, who set fire to his cat\, the characters bring Hamlet to life in ways you never thought possible. \nAn ultimately heart-warming comedy from award-winning New Zealand playwright Gavin McGibbon\,  (‘Holding On’ and ‘Under The Hood’). \nSynopsis:\nFive people with little in common are thrown together in a workshop to learn Shakespeare’s Hamlet from an intense drama tutor\, with the aim of performing excerpts before an invited audience. “This is art\, not therapy”\, says the tutor\, but the members of the group have a different idea. As they interact we learn their various motivations and finally even Shakespeare’s great work becomes a vehicle for some kind of understanding and resolution. \nCharacters\nBecker\nAge: forties-fifties; the unemployed drama teacher\, ‘plagued by self-loathing’ but tries his best (when put on the spot) to share his love of theatre with others. \nDouglas\nAge: forties-fifties; a hard-rocking drummer in a covers band; outwardly easy-going but going through a difficult patch.  \nPatricia\nAge: forties-fifties; single; librarian; thinks she’s God’s gift to the stage; dedicated follower of Becker. \nRhonda\nAge: forties; mother\, wife and bus-driver\, not necessarily in that order; no-nonsense\, not someone you want to mess with. \nCharlie\nAge: ‘ninety-one’ (or thereabouts); veteran of WWII; still full of life; struggling to come to terms with being deserted by his wife at 91. \nJimmy\nAge: nineteen; very withdrawn and quiet but has hidden talents that slowly become revealed.

DESCRIPTION:Looking for 6 actors\, 3 women and 3 men.  Singing required.\nAuditions 31 August 10 am to 3pm\nEmail jill@specialevents.co.nz for an audtion time.\nCome prepared with a monolgue and a song from any genre \nPlot:\nShattering dimwitted Officer Dwayne’s tranquil evening at the Birchwood County police station is interrupted by the arrests of three unlikely women; the mayor’s wife in a state of complete alcoholic breakdown\, the local mad cat-lady looking for somewhere to stay out of the rain\, and a dangerous looking New Yorker who has managed to crash her car into the police station while speeding through town. \nThe already chaotic situation descends into mayhem with the arrival of a New York gangster\, disguised as an FBI agent\, hell-bent on exacting revenge on his wife who is locked in the cell. By the end of the night\, the ladies have formed a gang\, sang some songs\, escaped from jail and locked the gangster up in their place\, leaving Officer Dwayne wondering how on earth he’s managed to make the arrest of a lifetime. \nDescribed critically as “a bright\, unabashed stage romp that’s a lot of fun right from the start and guaranteed to lift spirits” The Jailhouse Frocks is a sure fire comedy cracker.\nOfficer Dwayne Pope- Incredibly upbeat\, optimistic and dimwitted\,  He has been transferred from a nearby Police Department to help the Birchwood County Police Department. Birchwood did not get the best deal. Dwayne never fully recovered from a head injury\, although we suspect he was much the same prior to it… he just can be excused now. \nCharacters:\nVoice of the Chief –  The Chief communicates to Officer Dwayne via the police radio. The Chief is frustrated at being short staffed and having to work late. Unfortunately Dwayne hasn’t relieved the Chiefs workload but added to it. \n Cathy Monroe – Cathy has cats. A lot of cats. Due to a cat related insect infestation of her house she is in search of a place to spend the night. She is insightful one moment\, and half-witted and ludicrous the next. One thing she is not; is subtle. \n Elena Davidson – Elena’s entire identity is wrapped around her reputation as the Mayor’s wife. Beneath her educated\, highly strung and pretentious exterior is a woman trying to find her own place in the world. \nGloria Romano – A New Yorker with a tough exterior\, Gloria is\, along with her mobster husband Tony\, hiding out in Birchwood County. Street smart Gloria is quick witted and a shrewd judge of character. She was trying to escape from her husband when she was arrested. \n Tony Romano – New York mafia style gangster on the lam in sleepy Birchwood County with his wife Gloria. Tony is charming\, menacing and very\, very dangerous.

SUMMARY:Matthew\, Mark\, Luke and Joanne 11th-15th Sept 2019
DESCRIPTION:MATTHEW\, MARK\, LUKE AND JOANNE. A slick sophisticated comedy beyond belief.  \nMatthew\, a high performing advertising executive\, successful and happily married\, has a vision in a Supermarket. This epiphany drastically changes his life to the consternation of his wife and business partner. His successful creative energy is now channeled into charitable works.  \nMark\, his business partner and friend\, tries to hide his dismay and disgust at this radical change.  Mark is secular and very materialistic. His general nihilism is a dramatic counterfoil to Matthew’s new beliefs and way of life. \nJoanne\, Matthew’s wife\, a former lawyer\, now practices yoga\, and believes in homeopathy. She relies on her life coach and large doses of the herbal remedy Ignatia for health and happiness. Her own life experiences make her intolerant of Matthew’s new found beliefs and she demands Matthew choose either Christ or her. \n“Matthew\, Mark\, Luke and Joanne” presents these characters\, their beliefs and passions in an entirely believable manner. This play is a parable of our times and underscores many topical issues-faith\, materialism\, tolerance and respect. Carl Nixon’s work has been described as a “funny\, sharp and crisply staged play about the basic human need for some form of spiritual release.”

While the staff gets the drive-in spruced up for the show\, the customers don their best leather jackets and poodle skirts\, and the TV audience is adjusting the rabbit ears and popping the Jiffy Pop\, everyone is about to get a big surprise.\nHow is it that a simple pageant proclaiming the birth of Jesus replaces the Rock & Roll Special\, and who are those singing waitresses who steal the show in place of Rock & Roll’s biggest stars? DESCRIPTION:A combined production from Little Theatre and Repertory \n\nLeonard Vole convinces even the perceptive Sir Wilfred that he is innocent of murder\, although the circumstantial evidence is damning. In the mounting tension of the trial there are three amazing developments. Vole’s wife takes the stand and coldly swears away her husband’s alibi. A brassy young woman then sells Sir Wilfred’s letter proving how this acquittal has been engineered by Mrs Vole. But there is still the dramatic finale…\n\n\nWitness for the Prosecution: Cast\n\n\nFemale (4):\n\n\nGreta (Sir Wilfred’s typist\, an adenoidal girl with a good opinion of herself)\n\n\nRomaine (late 30s-early 40s\, a German woman of great personality\, but very quiet. But misfit Veronica Sawyer rejects their evil regime for a new boyfriend\, the dark and sexy stranger J.D.\, who plans to put the Heathers in their place – six feet under! \n\nHeathers The Musical is the darkly delicious story of Veronica Sawyer\, a brainy\, beautiful teenage misfit who hustles her way into the most powerful and ruthless clique at Westerberg High: the Heathers. Mezzo for chorus. NOTE: In certain choral songs Chandler can switch parts with her other Heathers as needed.\n\n\nHEATHER MCNAMARA – 17. Beautiful\, innocent\, stupid\, can be mean on command if Heather Chandler orders it\, but actually quite vulnerable and fearful. Voice: Strong belt to Db\, D preferred. Soprano for chorus. NOTE: in certain choral songs Heather Mac and Duke can switch vocal parts as needed.\n\n\nHEATHER DUKE – 17. Whipping-girl of the 3 Heathers. When she finally becomes Queen Bee she wields power like a bulldozer. Alto for chorus. Voice: Strong belt to C\, D preferred. Alto for chorus. NOTE: in certain choral songs Heather Duke and Mac can switch vocal parts as needed.\n\n\nMARTHA DUNNSTOCK – 17. Nicknamed “Martha Dumptruck”\, the opposite of hot\, confident\, or popular. Huge and beautiful soul\, optimistic even in the face of rejection. Voice: Strong belt to E or F\, wide vocal expression.\n\n\nRAM SWEENEY – 17\, Linebacker. Big\, insensitive to the feelings of others\, ruled by appetites. Voice: Strong Baritone\, belt to G\, some Falsetto useful.\n\n\nKURT KELLY – 17. Quarterback and Captain. Big\, chiseled\, rude\, entitled\, cocky. Mean\, thinks he’s the brains in the friendship with Ram. Voice: Tenor\, strong belt to Ab or A\, some Falsetto. NOTE: in certain songs Ram and Kurt can switch choral assignment if\, say\, Ram sings higher than Kurt.\n\n\nRAM’S DAD / BIG BUD DEAN / COACH RIPPER – 40 to 45. Ram’s Dad: Former football player turned suburban Dad\, has never outgrown his glory days in high school. Hates weakness\, but capable of soul-searching when tragedy strikes. Also plays Big Bud Dean: JD’s single Dad. Big jolly personality that barely conceals the enormous rage bubbling just below the surface. Quite possibly a serial bomber. Also plays Coach Ripper: Stalwart\, man’s man; quick to defend his players. Voice: Baritone/Tenor – power Country/Gospel belt to Ab\, higher welcome. NOTE: Sometimes this actor has played Principal Gowan instead of Big Bud/Coach.\n\n\nMS. FLEMING / VERONICA’S MOM – 45 to 50. Ms. Fleming: Aging hippie teacher\, still yearning for the day the Age of Aquarius reaches Ohio. Hungry for the spotlight\, resentful of entitled youth. Also plays Veronica’s Mom: easygoing\, distant\, yet capable of laying down the law. Voice: Great belt up to C\, higher always welcome.\n\n\nKURT’S DAD / VERONICA’S DAD / PRINCIPAL GOWAN – 30 to 45. Kurt’s Dad: Straight-laced\, very conservative\, also former football player. A simple guy\, not book smart\, you’d be happy to share a beer with him. Also plays Veronica’s Dad: Easygoing and distant. Voice: Strong Baritone/Tenor — power Country/Gospel belt to G\, even higher better. Also plays Principal Gowan: Rumpled\, burned out\, hates conflict. 99\nBOY 1 – Bitter Geek 16-18. A put-upon\, bitter geek. Voice: Bari (up to F#) or Tenor (up to A).\nBOY 2 – Blowdried Preppy 16-18. A blowdried 80’s preppy. Voice: Bass (up to E) or Bari (up to G#).\n\n\nBOY 3 – Hipster Dork 16-18. Thinks he’s Ducky from ‘Pretty In Pink.’ Voice: Bari (up to F#) or Tenor (up to A).\n\n\nGIRL 1 – Goth Girl 16-18. A sullen goth girl. Voice: Belt to at least C# (a Soprano up to high A/B is also a plus).\n\n\nGIRL 2 – Stoner Chick 16-18. A fuzzyheaded stoner chick.
