SUMMARY:WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION AUDITIONS
DESCRIPTION:A combined production from Little Theatre and Repertory \n\nLeonard Vole convinces even the perceptive Sir Wilfred that he is innocent of murder\, although the circumstantial evidence is damning. In the mounting tension of the trial there are three amazing developments. Vole’s wife takes the stand and coldly swears away her husband’s alibi. A brassy young woman then sells Sir Wilfred’s letter proving how this acquittal has been engineered by Mrs Vole. But there is still the dramatic finale…\n\n\nWitness for the Prosecution: Cast\n\n\nFemale (4):\n\n\nGreta (Sir Wilfred’s typist\, an adenoidal girl with a good opinion of herself)\n\n\nRomaine (late 30s-early 40s\, a German woman of great personality\, but very quiet. Her voice has a strangely ironic inflection)\n\n\nJanet Mackenzie (housekeeper\, a tall\, dour-looking Scotswoman)\n\n\nYoung woman (strawberry blonde\, with a crude\, obvious appeal)\n\n\nMale (7):\n\n\nCarter (Sir Wilfred’s chief clerk)/Mr Justice Wainwright (the judge)\n\n\nMr Mayhew (a typical middle-aged solicitor\, shrewd\, dry\, and rather precise)\n\n\nLeonard Vole (a likeable\, friendly young man\, about 27)\n\n\nSir Wilfred Robarts Q C (for the defence\, distinguished older man recovering from a heart operation)\n\n\nInspector Hearne (a tall\, good-looking officer)/Policeman\n\n\nPlain-clothes Detective/Warder\n\n\nMr Myers Q C (for the prosecution)\n\n\nMale/female (3):\n\n\nClerk of the Court/Court Usher\n\n\nMr/Miss Clegg (forensic laboratory assistant)\n\n\nDr Wyatt (police surgeon)\n\n\nOther walk-on\, non-speaking parts are available but not necessary

But misfit Veronica Sawyer rejects their evil regime for a new boyfriend\, the dark and sexy stranger J.D.\, who plans to put the Heathers in their place – six feet under! \n\nHeathers The Musical is the darkly delicious story of Veronica Sawyer\, a brainy\, beautiful teenage misfit who hustles her way into the most powerful and ruthless clique at Westerberg High: the Heathers. But before she can get comfortable atop the high school food chain\, Veronica falls in love with the dangerously sexy new kid J.D. When Heather Chandler\, the Almighty\, kicks her out of the group\, Veronica decides to bite the bullet and kiss Heather’s aerobicized ass…but J.D. has another plan for that bullet\n\n\nVERONICA SAWYER – 17. She burns to be both cool and kind\, but doesn’t know yet how to be both at the same time. Fierce sense of right and wrong\, keen sense of ironic humor. Thinks she’s an old soul\, but she’s still innocent enough to be blindsided by love/hormones (or shocked by cruelty). Voice: High belting required\, up to Ab. Must have dynamic and stylistic range.\n\n\nJD – 17. He is darkly charismatic\, compelling\, attractive\, charming on the outside yet very damaged on the inside. Keen smarts and strong inventive comedy. Voice: Strong\, confident belt to at least an Ab\, A preferable; wide emotional range.\n\n\nHEATHER CHANDLER – 17. Richest\, hottest\, most magnetic\, cruelest girl in town. Relishes power and wields it like a scalpel – no fear\, no patience\, no mercy. Voice: Strong belt to F or higher preferred. Mezzo for chorus. NOTE: In certain choral songs Chandler can switch parts with her other Heathers as needed.\n\n\nHEATHER MCNAMARA – 17. Beautiful\, innocent\, stupid\, can be mean on command if Heather Chandler orders it\, but actually quite vulnerable and fearful. Voice: Strong belt to Db\, D preferred. Soprano for chorus. NOTE: in certain choral songs Heather Mac and Duke can switch vocal parts as needed.\n\n\nHEATHER DUKE – 17. Whipping-girl of the 3 Heathers. When she finally becomes Queen Bee she wields power like a bulldozer. Alto for chorus. Voice: Strong belt to C\, D preferred. Alto for chorus. NOTE: in certain choral songs Heather Duke and Mac can switch vocal parts as needed.\n\n\nMARTHA DUNNSTOCK – 17. Nicknamed “Martha Dumptruck”\, the opposite of hot\, confident\, or popular. Huge and beautiful soul\, optimistic even in the face of rejection. Voice: Strong belt to E or F\, wide vocal expression.\n\n\nRAM SWEENEY – 17\, Linebacker. Big\, insensitive to the feelings of others\, ruled by appetites. Voice: Strong Baritone\, belt to G\, some Falsetto useful.\n\n\nKURT KELLY – 17. Quarterback and Captain. Big\, chiseled\, rude\, entitled\, cocky. Mean\, thinks he’s the brains in the friendship with Ram. Voice: Tenor\, strong belt to Ab or A\, some Falsetto. NOTE: in certain songs Ram and Kurt can switch choral assignment if\, say\, Ram sings higher than Kurt.\n\n\nRAM’S DAD / BIG BUD DEAN / COACH RIPPER – 40 to 45. Ram’s Dad: Former football player turned suburban Dad\, has never outgrown his glory days in high school. Hates weakness\, but capable of soul-searching when tragedy strikes. Also plays Big Bud Dean: JD’s single Dad. Big jolly personality that barely conceals the enormous rage bubbling just below the surface. Quite possibly a serial bomber. Also plays Coach Ripper: Stalwart\, man’s man; quick to defend his players. Voice: Baritone/Tenor – power Country/Gospel belt to Ab\, higher welcome. NOTE: Sometimes this actor has played Principal Gowan instead of Big Bud/Coach.\n\n\nMS. FLEMING / VERONICA’S MOM – 45 to 50. Ms. Fleming: Aging hippie teacher\, still yearning for the day the Age of Aquarius reaches Ohio. Hungry for the spotlight\, resentful of entitled youth. Also plays Veronica’s Mom: easygoing\, distant\, yet capable of laying down the law. Voice: Great belt up to C\, higher always welcome.\n\n\nKURT’S DAD / VERONICA’S DAD / PRINCIPAL GOWAN – 30 to 45. Kurt’s Dad: Straight-laced\, very conservative\, also former football player. A simple guy\, not book smart\, you’d be happy to share a beer with him. Also plays Veronica’s Dad: Easygoing and distant. Voice: Strong Baritone/Tenor — power Country/Gospel belt to G\, even higher better. Also plays Principal Gowan: Rumpled\, burned out\, hates conflict. 99\nBOY 1 – Bitter Geek 16-18. A put-upon\, bitter geek. Voice: Bari (up to F#) or Tenor (up to A).\nBOY 2 – Blowdried Preppy 16-18. A blowdried 80’s preppy. Voice: Bass (up to E) or Bari (up to G#).\n\n\nBOY 3 – Hipster Dork 16-18. Thinks he’s Ducky from ‘Pretty In Pink.’ Voice: Bari (up to F#) or Tenor (up to A).\n\n\nGIRL 1 – Goth Girl 16-18. A sullen goth girl. Voice: Belt to at least C# (a Soprano up to high A/B is also a plus).\n\n\nGIRL 2 – Stoner Chick 16-18. A fuzzyheaded stoner chick. Voice: Belt to at least C# (a Soprano up to high A/B is also a plus).\n\n\nGIRL 3 – Young Republicanette 16-18. A tennis-playing\, uptight Student Council type. Voice: Belt to at least C# (Soprano up to high A/B is also a plus)

SUMMARY:MOTHERHOOD THE MUSICAL
DESCRIPTION:Motherhood the Musical is on at the Playhouse from November 26 to December 5.\nShow starts at 7.30pm \nWondering what to do at the end of this crazy year to give your staff a treat?\nLook no further! Here’s a terrific option for your end of year work ‘DO’ ‘Motherhood the Musical’ – set around a baby shower with 4 friends – it’s delightfully\nentertaining\, with big wholesome laughs\, awesome toe-tapping songs and pizza and a magnum ice cream to boot. \nThis examination of how tough it is to be a parent is so engaging\, hilarious and touching that it is likely to be even more successful than our last mega end of year hit\n‘Menopause the Musical’.\n‘Motherhood’ focuses on wide-eyed Amy\, who is close to giving birth when her neighbours throw her a shower. The club includes tart-tongued Barb overwhelmed\nwith four children; stressed-out Brooke\, splicing motherhood and a law practice; and Tasha\, a minivan-driving divorcee who wonders if the split was worth the damage to her child.\nAt first\, Amy gushes with naive expectations\, but her clear-eyed friends quickly educate her on the draining demands and unique delights of motherhood.\nAnd the show is not just for Mum’s and Mum’s to be – Dad’s will be roaring with laughter as they recognise themselves in the hilarious script and Grandparents will\nfind themselves giggling along in payback! \nWe’ve kept it simple and fun this year with a low ticket price of just $40 which includes gourmet\, wood-fired pizza and a magnum ice cream at halftime so everyone can get out and enjoy themselves to celebrate the end of what has been a rather crappy year. \nAnd look out for our special themed cocktails at the bar!\nGet your group together now and book at iTicket or participating outlets.\nBook early though – last year\, our end of year show season was almost sold out before opening night.

SUMMARY:Heathers the Musical 14th-29th May
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning\, cult classic comes to Timaru in May.\n(Onstage 14 – 29 May\, Book online at iticket.co.nz) \nPerfect for the times\, the South Canterbury Drama League’s May  production of Heathers the Musical\, gives audiences the chance to look at the most terrible aspects of human nature\, laugh at them and maybe find inspiration to combat these things with love instead of anger. \nDirected by Cameron Lines with musical direction from Ella Thomas and choreography by Stevie Gallagher\, Heathers the Musical is the darkly delicious story of Veronica Sawyer\, a brainy misfit who hustles her way into the most powerful and ruthless clique at Westerberg High\, the Heathers. But before she can get comfortable atop the high school food chain\, Veronica falls in love with the dangerously sexy new kid J.D. When Veronica finally rejects the evil Heathers’ regime for her new boyfriend\, JD plans to put the Heathers in their place\, six feet under! \nA black comedy\, Heathers contains impressive vocals\, witty and often hilariously ‘inappropriate’ lyrics. Mostly a high energy\, fun show\, it opens up conversations about dark issues such as the cruelty of bullying\, violence in schools\, teen suicides and sexual assault. \nIt’s savagely\, blisteringly funny and uncomfortably truthful and asks questions of us – ‘why do we do such awful things to each other?’ ‘How can we do better?’ and ‘How far would you go to be accepted into a friendship group?’ \nUltimately Heathers reassures us that our experiences are not unique and that everyone feels like outsiders and weirdos sometimes and that’s ok. \nThe writers of Heathers the Musical have a clear message …“For those of us who dwell on the fringes\, we want to make it very clear\, we are all in this together. You may feel adrift and alone but you are not alone.\n‘This lifeboat is crowded but we can all help keep it afloat.’

SUMMARY:POSTPONMENT UPDATE
DESCRIPTION:THIS IS AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE SOUTH CANTERBURY DRAMA LEAGUE – Covid-19 and South Canterbury Drama League.\n\n\nAs we all face the difficult challenge of responding to COVID-19\, the South Canterbury Drama League advises the postponement of “Radio Plays”\, the workshop and auditions for “Piraticus Rex”\, and the SCDL AGM.\n\n\nWe fully intend to reschedule all of these once out of lockdown but with the uncertainty around how long lockdown will be\, we are unable to commit to any new dates at the moment. Thank you for your patience while we wait for advise from the MOH. Our Board will be working with sections\, casts and our production teams and crews\, to make the best decisions for all involved moving forward.\n\n\n“MusicVille” our upcoming Junior show\, have cast currently running some rehearsals on line which is definitely keeping up morale. At this stage\, there is no indication that we will reschedule this show which is on stage from the 30 Sept-3rd Oct and 6th-9th Oct.\n\n\nOur TheatreFest group were due in Queenstown for the semi final of TheatreFest but this is now postponed till the 5th Sept.\n\n\nWe were humbled by the support we received after last year’s lockdown with most of our shows “selling out” as soon as tickets went on sale and we thank you\, the local theatre lovers\, for your ongoing support of live theatre.\n\n\nWe look forward to hosting you at the Playhouse again soon.

SUMMARY:RADIO PLAYS 28th September - 2nd October
DESCRIPTION:Update:  All ticket holders are being contacted by iTicket to reassign tickets to these new dates.  Tickets maybe available to the public\, we will let you know if this is the case. \n                               Tues 28th Sept – 1940’s THEME NIGHT ‘Round up the Usual Suspects’\n\n\n\nFri 1 Oct — SCIENCE FICTION THEME NIGHT ‘The Force is With You’\n\n\n\nRADIO PLAYS.\nIn the good old days-no TV or internet- families would huddle around the radio to hear dramas and comedies and conjure up their own images. They were helped by the sound effects emanating from the valve radio. “Radio Plays” takes us to the broadcasting studio where “actors”  perform in front of a live audience and are heard in millions of homes across the world.   The “oohs”\, “ahhs” and “boos” that are transmitted into the  living room are the genuine responses from that audience.   Even the sound effects were created live on stage by Foley Artists\, presenting their own entertainment for the audience.\nThe first radio play  is “The 39 Steps” by Joe Landry.    It is a suspenseful dramatisation with comedic elements\, that any true Hitchcock fan will enjoy.   Richard Hannay is on the run for a murder he did not commit.   He must clear his name before the authorities (or worse still\, the spies who are trying to silence him) get him first.\nThe second play  is “The War Of The Worlds” by Howard E. Koch.  This is\, word-for-word\, the script produced by Orson Welles on Halloween night\, 1938 – the script that convinced a nation it was being invaded.   It tells the tale of Professor Pierson\, who is called upon to examine the strange meteor that has landed in New Jersey.   He must\, somehow\, avoid the Martian’s Heatray\, and choking black smoke in order to survive.   It is a chilling tale of how life\, as we know it\, can change overnight. \n

SUMMARY:The Last Five Years 2nd - 5th Feburary
DESCRIPTION:An emotionally powerful and intimate musical about two New Yorkers in their twenties who fall in and out of love over the course of five years\, the show’s unconventional structure consists of Cathy\, the woman\, telling her story backwards while Jamie\, the man\, tells his story chronologically; the two characters only meet once\, at their wedding in the middle of the show.\nRecently made into a movie starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan.\n\n\nMeet our two actors: Cathy will be played by ALI DIAMOND. Ali is a newcomer to the South Canterbury Drama League\, but is no stranger to the stage having many credits both here and internationally to her name!\nJamie will be played by CAMERON LINES. Many will be familiar with Cameron’s work both onstage and behind the scenes for many SCDL productions in recent years. Cameron will again appear on the Playhouse stage and we have little doubt will delight audiences once again.\n\n\nAudiences – Diary this must-see show now! Onstage at the Playhouse February 2022.
